Do you know how to prevent cold-related illness and injury?

There is still plenty of warm weather to be had in the weeks and months to come, but it won't be long before cooler temperatures move into the area.

If you work outdoors, it's imperative that you know how to do so in a safe manner. There are many ways to prevent cold-related illness and injury, including but not limited to:

  • Eat foods with carbohydrates as this will provide you with the warmth and energy you need for the workday
  • Drink fluids to stay hydrated
  • Remove wet clothes without delay
  • Insulate your entire body, from your head all the way down to your feet
  • Wear the right type of winter clothing
  • Protect your hands and feet at all times, as these are often the extremities that get cold first

When the temperatures cool down and the weather takes a turn for the worse, it can be more difficult to stay on the ball in regards to your personal safety. As a result, there is a greater chance of an accident occurring.

If you don't know how to prevent cold-related illness and injury, you need to change your approach as quickly as possible. This could be the difference between remaining safe and suffering a serious injury or illness.

If you are injured or become ill as the result of your employment, don't hesitate to receive medical treatment and follow your doctor's orders in the weeks and months to come. This may mean staying away from work for an extended period of time. In this case, you should learn more about receiving workers' compensation benefits.
