What are the symptoms of an ACL injury?

It's easy to believe that anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries only happen when playing sports, but nothing could be further from the truth. It's possible that you could suffer a sprain or tear in your daily life, even if you're being careful about every step you take.

To start, here's something you need to remember: The ACL is one of the major ligaments located in the knee. While there are many ways to injure this ligament, it's often the result of sudden stops, changing direction or taking an awkward step (such as into a hole).

The best way to understand if you have suffered an ACL injury is to visit with a medical professional. However, here are some of the many symptoms to be aware of:

  • The sound of a pop or the feeling of a popping sensation at the time of the injury
  • Serious pain in the knee and/or surrounding area
  • Loss of range of motion
  • Swelling that sets in within a couple of hours
  • A feeling that you are unable to put any weight on the knee

Since there is more than one type of ACL injury, you need to receive medical guidance to better understand what type of treatment is best.

If you suffer an ACL injury on the job, report it to your employer so they know exactly what went wrong. Once you know your treatment options and have an idea of how long it will take to recover, you may want to turn your attention to making a workers' compensation claim. The money you receive can help you while you heal
