What are the dangers of working in the rain?

During the fall months, you can rest assured that quite a bit of rain will fall throughout the state of Nebraska. While you may be familiar with working in wet conditions, it doesn't mean you can be any less cautious.

Many people work outdoors every day of the week, even during the fall and winter months. For instance, if you're in the construction industry, this may be something you're used to.

Unfortunately, there are many dangers associated with working in the rain. These include but are not limited to the following:

  • Increased risk of a slip-and-fall accident. When surfaces become slick, it can be a challenge to stay on your feet. This is why it's important to slow down and take caution.
  • Using the wrong equipment. It's a must that you understand what type of equipment you can and can't use in the rain. For example, you don't want to use electrical tools.
  • Improper hand protection. If you require a solid grip, you need to wear water-resistant gloves at all times.
  • Low visibility. Even if you can see others, they may not be able to see you. Rain and other weather conditions can cut down on visibility.

These are just a few of the many dangers of working in the rain. If you're concerned about the impact the weather could have on your job, don't hesitate to learn more about what you can do from a safety and productivity standpoint.

If you suffer an on-the-job injury, maybe because of heavy rain, report the accident to your employer, receive medical treatment, and then learn more about the workers' compensation system.
