Do you know how to treat a laceration?

Even if you work in a so-called "safe" industry, you should never rule out the possibility of suffering a laceration on the job.

While some lacerations are easy enough to treat, this isn't always the case. You shouldn't assume this is something you can handle on your own, as you may require professional medical treatment.

There are many steps to take as you attempt to treat a laceration on the job site. Here are four to keep in mind:

  • Stop the bleeding as quickly as possible, typically by putting pressure on the laceration
  • Clean and protect the area until you can seek additional treatment
  • Visit a health care provider, possibly at a local emergency room, to learn more about your injury and the type of treatment it requires
  • Keep a close eye on how the laceration heals, as an infection could cause additional health concerns

These are the four most important steps to take if you suffer a laceration on the job. Above all else, you should never assume that this is no big deal. Depending on the location of the injury, a laceration could cause long-term discomfort and disfigurement.

If your medical team suggests rest and/or additional treatment, you should listen to this advice. You don't want to return to work prematurely, as it could lead to additional harm.

If you're unable to work, learn more about the workers' compensation system and how to apply for benefits. You'll want to take advantage of this until you can return to your job and once again earn a living.
