If I am Injured at Work, Should I See a Doctor Immediately?

It is always advised that you see a doctor immediately after being hurt at work.

Workplace accidents can result in some of the most serious injuries. Workplace accidents vastly differ from those that happen in other places, but they have one thing in common. Your safety and well-being is the most important priority afterward, and it is crucial that you receive medical treatment. Failing to see a doctor after an accident will also not only put your health in jeopardy, but it could also put any future workers’ compensation claim you file at risk.

You Can Choose Your Own Doctor

Unlike in many other states, you are allowed to choose the healthcare provider you see after a workplace injury in Nebraska. Your employer, nor their insurance company, is allowed to tell you which doctor to visit. Your employer should also not try to intimidate you or bully you into waiving your right to see your own physician. Do not fall for this tactic and never waive your right to your own provider. However, you or one of your family members must have seen the doctor before the workplace accident. Otherwise, your employer may have the right to select a doctor for you.

You Do Not Have to Pay Any Balances to the Doctor

Regardless of the doctor you see after a workplace accident, you are not responsible for paying any balances to them. Your employer may try to tell you that you have to pay the costs upfront and will be reimbursed for them, but that is not true. Your employer and their insurance company are responsible for paying for your medical costs directly.

Always make sure you tell your doctor you were hurt at work, and make sure they are billing the employer and not your own health insurance. Medical providers mistakenly bill health insurance policies. This will make filing your workers’ compensation claim even more difficult, and could put your entire claim in jeopardy.

Follow Through With All Medical Treatment

Your doctor will likely recommend different courses of treatment for your workplace injury. It is important to follow through with all of these recommendations. If you do not, the insurance company may argue that you could have minimized your injury and prevented it from getting worse, but you did not. They may then use that argument to deny you the benefits you need to get better so you can return to work.
